Iloilo City is a popular stop on any tour of the Philippines. This historic city on Panay Island is rich with Spanish colonial architecture and churches that owe much to Iloilo's important role in the colonial textile and sugar industries. Today, the city draws visitors keen to explore its diverse history, grand colonial churches and squares and the nearby beaches and nature reserves. Explore Iloilo City's heritage
To explore some of the city's historic buildings, head to the downtown Iloilo City Heritage District of Calle Real. As well as admiring the neo-classical, beaux-arts and art deco buildings that survived WWII, you can browse the shops and restaurants housed within. For something more modern, try the Iloilo River Esplanade. A more recent addition to the city, it is Iloilo's newest hub for dining, leisure and recreation. The restored Molo Mansion makes for another interesting visit, now populated with local craftspeople and a rustic cafe, this beautiful building offers an interesting glimpse into a more traditional way of life.
Spring joys in Iloilo City
Iloilo City has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. Whatever season you visit, you can expect temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The downside of the tropical climate is that rainfall is also likely throughout the year, especially during the summer months. The driest months are December through April. During these months, Iloilo plays host to a number of festivals. In January, the Dinagyang Festival features street parties and parades. In February, the Paraw Regatta features traditional boats with colorful sails racing to Guimaras Island from Iloilo. The same month, the Feast of Our Lady of Candles is celebrated at Iloilo's impressive Jaro Cathedral.
Beach fun from Iloilo City
Head to Iloilo's shoreline and the site of the former Spanish fort, Fort San Pedro, to enjoy beautiful sunsets over the water. West along the Iloilo Strait, you'll reach the beaches of Oton, just 20 minutes from your Iloilo City vacation rental. Although these pleasant beaches have clear waters and plenty of local bars and restaurants to enjoy, Panay's best beaches are to be found on the island's most northern tip at Boracay. This is a good 6 hour journey from Iloilo City so you might want to consider a 2 stop trip that combines the culture and history of Iloilo City with the glorious white sand beaches of Boracay.
How to get to and around Iloilo
Fly into Iloilo (ILO-Iloilo Intl.), the closest airport, located 9.1 mi (14.6 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that's convenient for your trip, you could book a flight to Bacolod (BCD-New Bacolod - Silay), which is 31.3 mi (50.3 km) away.
