Take in the waterfront beauty of Aegina Town
The area's temples and museums are just a few of the reasons to vacation in Aegina Town. This city's island views, sailing and archaeology draw many visitors. Many of our vacation rentals offer full kitchens, spacious living quarters and sometimes even a hot tub—perfect for a relaxing getaway.
The miracle of Aegina's Agios Nektarios chapel
An Aegina vacation rental makes the perfect base for history buffs. One of the most popular attractions on the island is the church and monastery of Agios Nektarios, a Greek Orthodox saint who was known for performing miracles. This impressive terracotta-and-white domed church is open to the public and offers a fascinating insight into the Greek Orthodox religion. If you prefer ruins to chapels, then don't miss a trip to the Temple of Afea, one of Greece's oldest Doric temples, which dates back to the 5th century BC.
Life is looking pretty beachy on Aegina Island
Despite its small size, Aegina is crammed with glorious beaches, many equipped with watersports centers and cafes. One of the most popular is Marathonas Beach on the western shores of the island. It's become a hotspot for families, thanks to its clear, shallow waters, and wide, clean sands, and it also has a buzzy beachfront taverna. In the summer, you can hire loungers with views across to Moni Island and the Peloponnese peninsula. After a busy day on the beach, why not kick back with an ouzo and a game of tavli (Greek backgammon) in a beach bar.
Sizzling temperatures in summertime Greece
The Greek gods were certainly shining on Aegina when it came to handing out the weather. Greece and her islands benefit from a glorious Mediterranean climate, with long, sweltering summers, and short mild winters, and only a scattering of rain showers. The busiest time to visit is in the summer, between June and September, when temperatures often reach a blistering 90 degrees. It's also when Aegina vacation rentals get snapped up in advance. Visit in spring or fall and you'll still benefit from endless blue skies and balmy days, but you'll benefit from fewer crowds and quieter beaches.
Take a hike on the Greek Island of Aegina
One of the Saronic Islands, Aegina is a small islet located 16 miles south of Athens. Like much of Greece, it's crammed with natural beauty and staggering sea views. While there are a number of rugged hiking trails, some are barely discernible donkey tracks which run between the ancient villages. One of the most popular trails is from the small village of Anitseo. It climbs up to the Hellanion Oros Mountain, Aegina's highest peak and boasts some spectacular views of the islands. You may even spot some local wildlife, such as goat, spotted eagle, or the rare Egyptian vulture.
